The
Kennedy
Ranges
Some
161km
east
of
Carnarvon
and
running
north
from
Gasgoyne
junction.
The
ranges
195km
long
an
up
to
30km
wide,
are
remnants
of
an
old
erosion
surface
which
slopes
very
quickly
to
the
west.
They
are
known
for
their
semi
precious
gemstones
petrified
wood and
fossils.
Erosion
on
the
eastern
side
has
formed
spectacular
cliffs.
A
tourist
road
leads
to
a
picnic
site
by
these
cliffs.
The
southern
and
eastern
edges
of
the
range
are
dissected
by
a
maze
of
steep
sided
canyons
whose
permanent
springs
create
running
streams
which support
an
abundance
of
wildlife.
Blowholes
Discovered
in
1911,
the
Blowholes,
are
located
some
70km
north
of
Carnarvon.
The
route
is
via
the
North
West
Coastal
Highway,
or
via
Bibbawura
Bore
tracks.
Powerful
jets
of
water
are
forced
up
with
enormous
pressure
through
the
holes
in
the
rock
sometimes
to a
height
of
20m.One
km
south
of
the
Blowholes
lies
a
small
reef
adjacent
to
the
island
which
contains
tropical
fish
and
shells.
Oysters
can
be
prised
from
the
rocks
in
the
area.
Shark
Bay
Shell
and
Craft
Museum
An
international
standard
museum,
displaying
many
gemstones,
rocks,
Aboriginal
artefacts
and
other
items
of
historical
interest.
A
replica
of
the
Dutch
ship
"Zuytdorp"
wrecked
off
the
coast
in
1712
can
be
viewed.
The
first
recorded
white
man
to
set
foot
on
Australian
soil
was
Dirk
Hartog
in
1616.
A
replica
of
the
pewter
plate
he
left
at
Cape
Inscription
can
also
be
viewed.
Nanga
Station
and
Caravan
Park
50km
from
Denham,
built
over
30
years
ago
from
shell
blocks
cut
from
a
nearby
quarry.
The
half
million
acre
sheep
station
also
has
a
bottle
shop
license
and
restaurant.
Visitors
are
catered
for,
with
camping
facilities,
car
parks,
motel
units
and
chalets.
Nanga Wildlife
Park
offers
a
glimpse
of
Australia's
native
fauna
including
kangaroos,
dingos,
emus
and
even
crocodiles.
Station
Tours
are
available
and
catamarans,
sailboards
and
dinghies
can
be
hired
on
the
beach.
Red
Bluff
Follow
the
main
road
south
of
Kalbarri
for
4km.
Red
Bluff
is
a
good
spot
to
swim,
fish,
and,
for
the
more
adventurous,
go
surfing.
Go
exploring
among
the
formations
believed
to
be
four
hundred
million
years
old.
Natural
Bridge,
Castle
Cave,
Grandstand
Rocks, Shell
House,
Red
Bluff,
Mushroom
Gorge,
Rainbow
Valley
and
Pot
Alley
Gorge
can
also
be
reached
by
conventional
vehicles.
Erupting
Mud
In
the
Moresby
Ranges
on
Howatharra
Nanson
Road.
An
unusual
natural
phenomenon
-a
growing
mud
pile
by
the
side
of
the
road.
Old
Railway
Station
Built
to
serve
the
Geraldton
to
Northampton
railway
in
1879,
this
was
the
first
government
railway
building
in
Western
Australia.
Located
at
the
East
end
of
Mary
Street,
Northampton.
Chiverton
House
Museum
Located
on
the
North
West
Coastal
Highway,
Northampton.
Chiverton
House
was
built
in
the
1880s
as
a
home
for
Captain
Samuel
Mitchell.
An
extensive
display
of
local
history
that
is
one
of
the
finest
collections
in
Western
Australia.
The
Geraldton
Heritage
Trail
A
30km
driving
tour
of
both
the
natural
and
cultural
heritage
of
Geraldton.
Thirty
points
of
interest
are
included.
The
Lighthouse
Keeper's
Cottage
Built
in
1870,
it
was
the
original
lighthouse
for
the
port
and
now
serves
as
the
headquarters
of
the
Geraldton
Historical
Society.
It
is
located
an
Chapman
Road
and
open
Thursday
only.
Geraldton
Maritime
Museum
On
Marine
Terrace,
the
Geraldton
Museum
houses
the
relics
of
ships
wrecked
on
the
Geraldton
coastline
and
the
Abrolhos
Islands,
including
the
Batavia
(1629),
Zuytdorp
(1712)
and
the
Zeewyck
(1727).
Geraldton
Region
Museum
Situated
on
Marine
Terrace
the
museum
exhibits
natural
and
cultural
displays
and
is
open
daily.
Greenough
Hamlet
The
Hamlet
comprises
of
eleven
of
the
original
buildings
which
the
National
Trust
has
restored
and
maintained.
A
walk
through
history
on
a
conducted
tour
of
the
building
is
recommended.
Greenough
Pioneer
Museum
Situated
in
a
120
year
old
family
farm
house,
the
museum
displays
one
of
the
best
folk
collections
in
the
State.
It
is
run
by
the
Geraldton
Historical
Society,
and
tours
are
available
daily
except
Friday
The
Hampton
Arms
In
1863
the
then
Governor
Hampton
attended
the
opening
in
the
hotel
being
named
after
him.
After
years
as
the
social
centre
of
the
district
it
became
first
a
farmhouse
and
then
a
private
residence.
Today,
it
reflects
its
former
glory
as
a
privately owned
hotel.
Facilities
include
accommodation
,
restaurant
and
bar.
Abandoned
Mining
Settlements
In
the
early
1900s,
prospectors
established
many
small
towns
around
Sandstone
including
Youatlmi,
Paynesville,
Berrigrin,
Barrambje
and
Montague.
Today,
Sandstone
is
surrounded
by
these
abandoned
settlements
where
prospecting
for
alluvial
gold
or
hunting
for
relics
is
a
popular
pastime.
Courthouse
Museum
Located
in
Gibbons
Street
behind
the
Telecom
building.
An
excellent
collection
with
many
exhibits
of
the
past
80
years.
These
include
original
documents,
harnesses;
photographs,
domestic
items
and
Aboriginal
weapons.

Wildflower
Rest
Area
Located
at
the
entrance
to
the
township
of
Three
Springs
is
the
information
bay,
and
a
heritage
path
guiding
you
through
a
living
display
of
wildflowers
from
the
surrounding
area.
