Kangaroo Island - South Australia
As a result of its isolation from the mainland, Kangaroo Island has one of Australia’s most impressive concentrations of wildlife and is an idyllic holiday destination. Kangaroo Island, Australia’s third largest island is located in the remote Southern Ocean, off the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula.
The island is a must see for wildlife-watchers and fishing enthusiasts alike. Seal Bay is home to a colony of Australian sea lions, while at Cape du Couedic in Flinders Chase National Park there is a colony of 600 New Zealand fur seals.
This national park is also the best place to see land animals like kangaroos, tammar wallabies, brush-tailed possums and the occasional koala or platypus. There is a large and varied bird population, some 240 different species across the island, with Murray Lagoon home to many waterbirds. Little penguins can be seen on tours operating from Kingscote or Penneshaw.
Other attractions include the coastal scenery – rugged surf beaches in the south and idyllic coves in the north – its maritime history and its local produce. The island is reached by vehicular ferry from Cape Jervis or by plane from Adelaide. Accommodation options include camping spots in the forest, beachfront apartments and eco cabins.
