Hollands
Track
Determined
to
reach
the
Goldfields
in
record
time,
John
Holland
and
four
mates
cut
a
track
from
Broomehill
to
Coolgardie.
This
track
was
used
by
many
prospectors,
riding
or
walking
beside
their
heavy
wagons.
The
marks
cut
by
the
wheels
can
still
be
seen
on the
Lake

Roe
Heritage
Trail
This
Trail
traces
part
of
J.S.
Roe's
explorations
of
1848.
It
begins
south
of
lake
King
and
covers
natural
reserves,
historical
sites
and
panoramic
views.
This
countryside
abounds
with
wildflowers,
especially
in
spring.
Wave
Rock
Wave
Rock
is
found
just
4km
east
of
Hyden
on
a
natural
reserve
of
some
160ha.
Geologists
believe
the
original
formation
was
vertical,
but
has
been
sculptured
and
coloured
by
chemicals
over
2,700
million
years
to
take
on
its
wave-like
character.
The
"Wave"
is
not
a
separate
rock,
but
an
overhanging
wall
more
than
100m
long
on
the
northern
side
of
a
granite
outcrop
known
as
Hyden
Rock.
Wave
Rock
rises
15m
above
the
ground
like
a
giant
wave
about
to
break.
For
its
full
length,
it
is streaked
with
vertical
bands
of
rusty
red,
ochre
and
sandy
grey,
simulating
the
rolling
movement
of
the
sea.
These
beautiful
bands
of
colour
are
caused
by
"runoff"
waters,
charged
with
carbonates
and
iron
hydroxide
from
the
rock
itself.
When
the
water
evaporates,
the
minerals
are
deposited
on
the
slope,
their
various
colours
increasing
the
banded
appearance
of
the
rock-face.
