Newport Beach Sydney. New South Wales
Newport sits at the head of the Pittwater inlet in a small valley between Bushranger's Hill (above Bungan Beach) to the South
and Bilgola Plateau to the North. There are a wide variety of shops and restaurants in the shopping
centre which lies adjacent to the beach. The Newport Arms beergarden (next to Newport Wharf) which boasts superb views
over the Pittwater inlet is a great place for lunch when the sun shines.
Travellers first began to visit Newport in the 1880s when the Newport
coach line was
established. The first sale of allotments was made in October 1880 and a spacious weatherboard hotel was built at the site of
todays Newport Arms Hotel.
Beaches
Newport Beach
Plenty of parking and easy access combined with its close proximity to Newport shopping centre make Newport
one of the peninsula's most popular beaches.
Norfolk Island Pines line the beach providing welcome shade on
those hot summer days. Gas barbeques are located under the pines adjacent to the surf club.
Toilets and showers are located in the surf club.
Newport is Patrolled during the summer months and there is a 50m rock pool at the southern with toilets and showers.
Bungan Beach
One of Sydney's most charming beaches, Bungan is often heralded as the cleanest beach in the area and one of the most eremetic.
Access to Bungan is only possible by two rather steep walkways, one at the Northern end and the other at the middle of the beach.
This extra effort keeps the crowds down compared to other beaches. Parking is limited to the roadside and it may be difficult to find
a close park on summer weekends.
Bungan is well protected from summer nor-easters and patrolled by lifesavers during the summer months. Toilets and showers are
situated at the Northern end of the beach but there are no shops.
Fishing
The low rock shelf between Bungan Beach and Mona Vale Basin can be fished for drummer and groper during flat seas.
The rocks closer to shore can produce bream early morning and evening. At the Northern end of the beach the rocks near the
clubhouse can be fished for bream and tailor.
Newport Reef (between Newport and Bungan) is considered on of the best rockspots on the Northern Beaches.This large flat
reef which sits 100m offshore is only accessible by wading out at low tide in flat seas or by paddling out on a surfski or board. Species
include Kingfish, snapper, bream, tailer, luderick, drummer and groper. There are also many good spots for drummer, bream, snapper,
and luderick around the rocks of Bungan headland.
Newport Beach usually has good gutters for beach fishing for bream and has produced some large jewfish.
