Tiwi Islands - Northern Territory

The islands of Melville and Bathurst are known as the Tiwi Islands Northern Territory. Located 80 kilometres of Darwin, these two Australian islands are composed of long sandy beaches, rock pools and thick rainforests. Melville Island is Australia's 2nd largest island. Most of the 2700 islanders live on the island of Bathurst but around 900 people still live on the island of Melville. The Tiwis who live on Bathurst return to Melville every year to learn and teach others about their culture.

Travelers to Tiwi Islands Northern Territory need a permit to visit the islands. There are quite a few fishing lodges located on the island for people who love to fish. A unique experience is one where visitors can join a hunting party to search for bush foods like mud crabs, mud mussels and mangrove worms.

The people who live on Tiwi Islands Northern Territory are known for their art. They produce paintings on bark and on canvas, make silk screen cloth as well as batik, make wooden carvings and sculptures, weave and produce pottery. Their work can be seen in galleries on both Melville and Bathurst Island . Visitors are also able to purchase art work from the artists on the guided tours.

Consider Tiwi Islands Northern Territory for your next holiday. Experience the warmth of the Tiwi People, learn about their culture and see their beautiful island.
