Dunk Island - North Queensland Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island - Queensland

A large continental island just 24 km (15 miles) east of Cairns, Fitzroy island is the third most northerly in the Great Barrier Reef. This is one tropical island where you can afford to stay for a really long holiday. You can choose from excellent low cost accommodation in the resort, in beach-houses or camping. Permits for the latter can be arranged at the Great Barrier Reef Centre in Cairns before your departure.

What will you do on Fitztroy Island?

Butterflies, bushwalks through eucalypt and tropical rainforests, coral beaches and excellent snorkelling and diving on the reef can all be enjoyed here. Sheoak, Indian Beech, Native Nutmeg, Tamarinds, and Turpentine as well as native orchids are just a few examples of the exotic flora you'll find on bushwalks through the island.

Go snorkelling or learn to dive.

The best spots are off Nudey Beach or Little Fitzroy Island. The Dive Shop will help you select any of the fifteen excellent sites they have identified around the island. Learn to dive, but book ahead. Hire catamarans, surf-skis sailboards or canoes.

How to get to Fitzroy Island.
A high speed catamaran will whisk you to Fitzroy Island from Cairns.
