Somewhere between Adelaide and Darwin, around the time you haven't seen another car for forty minutes, the scale of Australia actually hits you. The country has more than 900,000 kilometres of road crossing everything from tropical rainforest to red desert.
The best way to see any of it is behind the wheel. Planning a road trip here can feel a bit like picking your next move on vegasnow - the options just keep going.
The Great Ocean Road, Victoria
Start in Torquay, about 100 kilometres southwest of Melbourne. Follow 243 kilometres of twisting bitumen along the southern coastline.
The Twelve Apostles get all the fame, but don't skip the rainforest walks in Great Otway National Park. The sleepy charm of Lorne and Apollo Bay deserves a stop too.
Budget two to three days - rushing defeats the purpose. Autumn is perfect: fewer crowds, golden light, and the whale migration kicks off around May.
The Explorers Way: Adelaide to Darwin
Here's the big one. Roughly 3,000 kilometres stretch from the vineyards of the Barossa Valley to the tropical top end.
You'll hit Coober Pedy along the way - an underground opal mining town where people literally live in caves to escape the heat. Uluru, Kings Canyon, and Alice Springs follow.
The Stuart Highway is sealed the entire stretch, so any vehicle handles it fine. Allow at least ten days. Fill your tank every chance you get north of Port Augusta - servo spacing gets thin out there.
Gibb River Road, Western Australia
A 660-kilometre track through the Kimberley awaits those who want dirt, river crossings, and gorges that look Photoshopped. You'll need a proper 4WD with decent clearance - think Prado or Hilux at minimum.
The road opens after the wet season, typically around May, though delayed openings happen. El Questro Wilderness Park and Manning Gorge are standout stops.
The western half is partly sealed now, but corrugations on the eastern stretch will rattle everything loose. Check Main Roads WA conditions before heading out.
Great Barrier Reef Drive, Queensland
Cairns to Cape Tribulation is only about 140 kilometres, but what a stretch it is. The road hugs the coast between the Daintree Rainforest and the reef. A cable ferry carries you across the Daintree River.
Stop at Mossman Gorge, grab a swim, then push north where the sealed road ends and the real tropics begin. Pair it all with a snorkelling trip off Port Douglas for the full experience.
Tasmania's Circle Route
Tassie is compact enough that two weeks lets you loop the whole island comfortably. Drive from Hobart to Cradle Mountain, across to Strahan on the wild west coast, down through the Huon Valley, and back again.
The roads are excellent. Distances are short by mainland standards. The produce is ridiculous - cheese, whisky, oysters, and cherries depending on the season.
